I've been a bit quiet on the blog front (this one anyway - there's always Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and more!) but here are a few from a shoot I did today for the newly refurbished Pizza Hut in Kingswood, Hull.

The other I was asked to supply some images for a bridal magazine. As with most things, photography is a personal taste thing, so having to choose between my favourites and what I think people might like as well is always going to be tricky, as they are not always the same thing!
I've photographed dozens and dozens of weddings over the years in the Hull and Yorkshire area, so I had a lot to choose from.
I thought I would share some of the ones I selected .Winter Wedding at The Hospitium, Museum Gardens, YorkSummer Wedding at Cave Castle with a stop-off at the park!Wedding at Holy Trinity Church, HullWedding at Lazaat, Cottingham

I was contacted by Craig at CRK Engineering as his rapidly expanding business and relocation to larger premises meant the images in his promotional materials, website etc were all very much out of date!
We had a chat about the type of images he needed then I set to work, covering some hands-on working at the many machines in the workshop, as well as headshots and groupshots of all the employees.

As we start 2015, I can look back at the photographs from 2014, from weddings to family portraits, baby bumps and boudoir calendar shoots and commercial work, taking me around Hull and Yorkshire. Here are some from last year, and looking forward to 2015!

I've just returned from my pre-wedding meeting with Scott and Anne, who are getting married at St Peter's, Wawne TOMORROW! They wanted a wedding photographer
based in East Yorkshire and I was delighted to be asked.
As they live in Scotland, with family in East Yorkshire, this is the first opportunity we had to meet. So, with all details sorted, we did a quick photo shoot at Willerby Manor, where they'll be having their reception.

On Saturday, after a few postponements due to weather and Hull Fair, I did a shoot with Laura and Simon, plus their two boys. They wanted some studio-based shots but also wanted to go outside for some more natural photos.
Beautifully coordinated in red and blue, we got a bunch of great shots in the studio.
Then, after a quick change of outfits for all of them, we headed to the park for a wander around, enjoying the (thankfully) pleasant Autumn afternoon!

I was contacted by Melissa a few weeks back, looking for a photographer to do a collaboration photoshoot in a vintage/retro style. She had plenty of ideas and even brought her mum's old record player in.
We had a great time, she smiles a lot and she has a very bubbly personality, making my job pretty easy! As we are both based in Hull, I hope to see her again soon!

A few nerves were jangling on Saturday as Helen was a bit late, putting
it lightly! The ceremony was in the beautiful Holy Trinity Church in the
centre of Hull, then most of the wedding party (including bride and groom)
hopped on the vintage East Yorkshire double decker bus which took them
to Lazaat Hotel in Cottingham. They braved the inclement weather for a
few minutes before we all retreated inside for the reception, speeches
and on to the evening party.
They had friends and family from all over the world, and there was some fancy footwork to be seen on the dancefloor;
not just from dancer Danny, as the ceilidh band burst into action. Some
gentle encouragement helped get some willing dancers on the floor and
they thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

Saturday's wedding was at St John's church in Hull, with their reception at the Hallmark Hotel, North Ferriby. They even had a surprise guest for Vickie, who is a big fan of Kevin Bacon!

I spent an afternoon at a good friend's shop the other week, photographing a selection of the delights she makes. Fantastic detailing on the cakes, perfect for weddings and other special occasions, plus handmade chocolates and a vast array of icecream: a great afternoon out!

Saturday's wedding at Lazaat. The usual nervousness was heightened by the awful weather the day before but Saturday morning brought lots of sun (too much for my liking but we have means to get around it!) and just a a touch of wind.

Another changeable day yesterday - it rained on the way up to the Hallmark Hotel in North Ferriby for Jenna and James' vintage themed wedding
, then thankfully held off (just about!) once the ceremony was over.
All the decorations had been either made or heavily supervised by Jenna and they did look beautiful. The whole theme just went together wonderfully, from the flowers to the table settings to the delightful bow-ties and straw hats!
As a surprise from James, he had arranged for a VW campervan to collect Jenna (supplied by The Alternative Wedding Car company
) and bring her to the hotel, so we had a trip out to the riverside for some shots, where they could enjoy a few minutes of peace (and champagne) on the drive there.

After being married forty years ago, Jean and Neil decided to renew their vows in a small ceremony at St James' Church in Sutton-Upon-Hull, and called on me to be their photographer
for the day.
They had their family and friends there of course, with their sons taking part, leading Jean down the aisle or doing readings.
Here are some more photos. The rest are at in the gallery at www.dbrooksphoto.co.uk

Part of being someone's wedding photographer
is building a relationship with the couple: after all, on their wedding day I could be the person the see the most of, so they have to like me at least a bit!
To help with this, for all my regular packages I include a pre-wedding photoshoot - not a huge all day shoot, but half an hour or so, walking around the venue or a favourite place, to get the couple used to me pointing a camera at them, all the time discussing what they want from their big day, and hopefully have them a little more relaxed on the wedding day.
Here's a lovely couple who were married at Rudstone Walk, South Cave, East Yorkshire, a few weeks ago. We met up only a few weeks prior to that (they were so busy in their preparations and stag/hen weekends - that's the earliest they could do!) and walked around the grounds, talking about ideas and finding good places to shoot. Here are some of the photos.

After this week's glorious weather (sunburn in April for me!) we had a typical blustery day for today's appointment with for a shoot involving the Lisa's pet dog Alfie had already been booked some time then moved due to bad weather!
As a photographer based in and around Hull and East Yorkshire, you rarely get the perfect conditions and sometimes have to make the best of the situation, and Lisa braved the wind (but not the camera) while Alfie ran about East Park for a bit. Lisa had been given a gift certificate so was looking for a nice canvas of the little fellow.
I was was also having fun, getting a bit muddy, on my knees, on my belly, whatever it took to keep up with the playful pooch! Here are a couple of photos.

Just been to The Church on The Way Toddler group this morning. I take our little lad Sam there every Thursday, and once a year I've been bringing the gear down there and doing a set of mini photoshoots for anyone who goes there.
Ten minute slots each, so you have to work fast and hope they're willing! It's a bit cruel really, because one minute they are happily playing with toys then the next the are from the playroom and plonked in front of me... no fun for anyone of any age!
More photos for ordering are here toddler photoshoot
Not a good start!
A little cutie, this one. Had to go with a vintage feel.

I love it when couples have an idea or theme for their wedding. We incorporated Lauren and Mark's "Hull Landmarks" theme in their pre-wedding shoot, starting in Garbo's (for the cocktails) and going for a walk around.
I'll be their wedding photographer
in a month - here are a few from their shoot!

Glad to be getting on with the wedding photography
, even though the winter was reasonably mild! Kathryn and Rob are a lovely couple who really wanted to enjoy their special day with as many friends and family as possible, so had large family groups, work friends, uni friends, musician friends... Lots of people!
The whole thing was at the Mercure Royal Hotel, in the centre of Hull, so not a lot of coaxing required for outdoor shots. I started with Kat and the bridesmaids as they were preparing all morning, and as Rob was also getting ready at the hotel, I got chance to spend a bit of time with the boys too for their ten minutes of getting ready!
Here are some photos from the day.

Time to stop decorating and get back in to wedding mode! As with all my couples this year, during my pre-wedding meeting with Kathryn and Rob, we did a mini-photoshoot, just for a practice and to see what they are like when a camera is stuck in their faces!
Next month I'll be their photographer
when they will be getting married at the Royal Hotel in Hull, we stepped out into the station and had a short wander.

Wedding season is over for a while, and it's very nearly Christmas so portraits are done, so it was time to do something different from my usual photographs.
Here's a technique I've been wanting to try for a while. The main hold-up was me getting around to cleaning the car!
As a photographer in Hull
, I kind of had to use this location, despite having no interest in football or rugby, but I managed to find a spot in the KC Stadium carpark that was dark enough to use.
It involves several long exposures, walking around the subject in the dark with a steady light source, like a torch, or in my case a video light, and painting parts of the car with the light. When you're back at home warming up, you spend some some time merging the photos together to assemble the lit parts in Photoshop.
If you have a car nicer than my people carrier and would like something similar done, get in touch and we can talk ideas. See the video here:
